Affirming Resources for Neurodivergent Individuals

Hi! I’m Adelle, the clinical psychologist behind Neurodivergent Ally.

NeurodivergentAlly is home to the popular card decks Spoon Thieves, Spoon Savers, and ND me. You can check them out here

As a clinical psychologist, my work consists primarily of autism and ADHD assessments and therapeutic supports for my wonderful ND clients, and is what fuels my passion for creating change for neurodivergent people. Neurodivergent Ally came about because I was frustrated by the lack of neuro-affirming resources for therapists, schools, and families.

Being affirming means that autism and ADHD are understood as different brain styles, rather than disorders. This approach recognises that many autistic people are also ADHD-ers, and vice-versa. Neurodiversity-affirming approaches build understanding, acceptance, and recognition of unique support needs of autistic and ADHD individuals (as well as our strengths), and places responsibility on our communities (rather than individuals) to change.

Although my resources were originally designed for other therapists, they are suited to a rich variety of applications and environments. Since their release in 2022, I have received positive feedback from neurodivergent individuals, families, teachers, and support providers, as well as glowing reports from the therapists and other health professionals for whom they were originally designed! And, in case you were wondering, the answer is ‘Yes’ - I am also neurodivergent. Follow me on Instagram or Facebook to learn more about me and the work that I do.

At their core, the Neurodivergent Ally resources are about helping neurodivergent people (and those who support them), to understand and communicate about neurotypes and needs, so that they can achieve a positive sense of self-worth, and access appropriate supports. Our resources are informed by the Neurodiversity-Affirming Paradigm, the Social Model of Disability, and Spoon Theory (by Christine Miserandino). Because neurodivergent people experience traits and challenges within a spectrum (think colour-wheel, not linear), resources may be used across the age span, depending on individual needs.
